Being dated 1940 on the liner is a good start, but the over paint on the outside could well have been applied during the Italian campaign. As pictures do show this.
But whether S.A units painted their helmets as they traveled through the different Countries from the desert to greener lands of the North African campaign?
At least the helmet looks to have been used, which the fast majority of S.A helmets didn't.
