I wouldn't mind having that Italian Flag, in either case...

The coloured flash is for the Natal Mounted Rifles, but would normally be orientated through 90 degrees so the stripes went left to right not up and down
Thanks alot!!! It does seem that my helmet ever had a emblem attached on the front, so that would be this emblem?

I also found a pith helmet that looks very similar to mine, I think same flash colors and way of placement, green has been eaten almost completely.

Thanks, I hope the military archive can help me. There are two names in the helmet that can be researched but I will start with the most interesting one that is also written in Arabic.

I can do a photoshoot with a WWII Italian civil flag to catch the vibe of that picture :-D

Another update, I was able to receive the service records and the man did serve in the Natal mounted rifles. Now it's time for me to study the paperwork :-D

I'll include this diagram with flashes which was kindly provided to me by the SA military archive. Based on this description my flash is NMR (natal mounted rifles) and applied correctly.
