WW1 Brodie/Doughboy helmet
Lately I have seen Brodie/Doughboy helmets with the "Y" stamp markings under the brim. Who is the manufacturer and what country does it orriginate from? I have found absolutely no listings from any country that utilizes the "Y" stamping. Judging from the age of these lids, they appear to be of WW1 era. Could it be American before they adopted the "Z" lettering? I read in rare cases the U.S. also used "U" stamped on their brim. Anybody?

Hi Denfly
If it is a British Brodie it will have a split rivet on the chin strap hanger, the U.S, M17 had a solid rivet, i dont know about the stamps though, hope this helps.
Dave.

Re: WW1 Brodie/Doughboy helmet
No pics and I know about the split rivets, but these helmets come up time to time on E-bay and it is clearly a "Y" stamped on the brim. Other folks have inquired about these on other blog and uniform sites but no one has an answer. Odd how over the years something like this has eluded collectors. I found out that The "Y" stamp preceded the "Z" stamp as an early American model. There is also the rare "X" stamping prior to the "Y". Has anyone else ever heard of this?
