Default Australian Slouch Hat Green Eyelets WW2 or later????

    Hi team,

Apologies if this has been answered before via another thread. I have a pretty bare slouch with green eyelets. I'm just wondering if that is a WW2 production trait. The pug is missing as is the liner and chin strap. The brim has an covered edge. There is no push button stud - clip only.

And an unrelated question - did CARR provide studs for WW1 slouches as well as WW2?

your links dont work, use the forum picture hosting to post them if you want an answer.

From the description it sounds post 1950's as they went over to green eyelets, hook up side and cloth trim.

Looks post war, I think they continued to use a press stud on the brim until the mid or late 50's by which time it would/should have a later version of the rising sun badge.

It is unfortunately fairly easy to swap the badge and remove the liner which should have been dated to attempt to sell these for a higher price. IMO these later versions will only go up in value so it is a shame that some people mess with them. A good untouched Korean War or Vietnam War period example should attract a good price already and they will only go up in value.

Perhaps an Aussie slouch hat specialist can comment and give you better news.

I agree with Jerry but some veterans told me many years back that removal of the sweat band was a common occurrence. In the jungle especially the leather became rank & moldy so they pulled it out. Better fit also when it got wet....
Having said that, this one does not seem to have had any field exposure.

I agree that sometimes the sweatband was removed during use.

Though it should be remembered that the same can be done to disguise the date of a post war version.

The pre or early WWII versions had cloth edge trims and either hook & eye or poppers, but they all use red eyelets, late war versions might have red or green eyelets, but all had poppers, so green eyelets and hook & eye is post WWII IMO.

My experience is that 90 percent of WW1/2 Aussie slouch hats have had the liner removed..After the wars these were used as bush hats or just common work hats..when i was a kid i had around 20, none had liners, my grandfathers, uncles, everyones were just treated as a hat..

Great to have anecdotal evidence that liners were removed but it does not help the threadstarter decide if he had been sold a post war slouch with added war time badge to deceive.

Just to add that one of my British slouch hats also had its liner removed, though it had been replaced by someone gluing something else in its place. It had obviously be used post war as it had a glider club badge pinned to it. I also have two very old slouch hats and both of them are missing their liners, so liner removal is in use common, but so is it to facilitate fraud.

Agree with the other fellow members , this one is post war with incorrect variation badge applied .
