Article about: The British introduced a tinfoil liner inside the sun helmet in c1942-43, which fits with the date of your slouch -here's one from my collection-. A mate has one of these slouch hats, Britis

I was hoping to get an answer on that too, but my guess is for heat prevention as these where used in the CBI theater of WW2

    LOL.

Yes, it is to prevent heat transfer.

    Cheers, Ade.

Temp regulation would be my bet too, but just wondering why they bothered; had the hat been part mesh, it would have done the job of regulating the temperature, but of course wouldnt have looked 'the'part.'

Would not the tin foil hold in the heat,as the head is a major conduit for body heat release

    Extra shot,
I think the band may help in the venting, but that is a guess from me and may help for water proofing + remember this is technology in it's infancy

Cool Banana's again Rene. Another interesting item mate.
The foil would have to be thermal insulation and as you say may offer some water repelancy as a bonus.
The extra vents may bleed off heat from the head itself whilst the insulation stops direct heat from the sun.
A bit extreme to an Australian but,I had a little giggle when I saw inside it.
    Cheers all.
