Jerry - Thanks for insight on the maker's details! It sounds like the time frame is interwar-WWII, which was the exact period I was hoping for!

Michael - I understand now, and thanks for the clarification on the rank (I erroneously thought 2nd lt. and sub lt. were interchangeable). The inside of the sweatband as nothing, but the front has the handwritten letters "W.W".

As for covers, do you know how to date them? The one I have came from a merchantman visor cap of unknown date and features the correct corded twill. It has elastic around the opening (should this be a drawstring?) and has only two seams underneath (front and back).

British Michael and thanks if and when you can. They are to be found on Ebay if you don't have one.

Hi Again, British officers get a clothing purchase allowance and provide their own uniforms etc. from it. Specialist clothing is always provided at public expence. As items are purchased from military tailors, you will find a wide variation in qualities and methods of fitment. Older type cap covers had either a single or pair of small white buttons at the back of the underside of the crown, some just had a deep skirt that tucked into the cap band. I do not recall seeing elasticated on RN caps but they probably were used. Likewise with the material, it could be (and still is) vinyl, corded or smooth material and combinations of attachment methods. So realy, there is no actual definitive answer to your question.
Hope that this is of some help to you.
    Cheers MR

Very nice cap and a good maker. I agree with what's been said about late 1930s/WW2 era. Most examples you see are Gieves Ltd, or Sanders.... so IMO an interesting example.
