Nice example by Compton & Webb, looks to have been marked size 7 before over stamping with 57, suggesting postwar issue, though probably war time made IMHO. I just bought an example and waiting for it to arrive sometime next week.

Whatever its just an opinion.
I suspect a possible Continental army used it, possibly Belgian or Dutch, hence the "57" size mark. These caps would have gone out of use with the British Army long before meteric sizes came in for us for us.
But it does not detract, all part of the story.
