    Default Gordon Highlanders feather bonnet

Another of my acquisitions over the past few days, a vintage Gordon Highlanders feather bonnet. There is considerable fading to the ribbon at the back, and the ostrich feathers seem to be losing their plumage a bit - but al-in-all it is a nice example. The seller said that it only had two feather tails, but it actually has three. The other was tucked inside the hidden pocket in the frame. I have it on good authority that this is where the squaddies used to hide their ciggies and matches. My finger is pointing to the pocket in one of the pictures. I suspect that the chinstrap is a more recent addition going off the stitching, but although plastic, it still appears to have some age to it. The name tag was found inside the pocket.

    Cheers,
    Steve.

I wore one of these , one summer I worked at Halifax Citadel as a 78th Highlander . I believe our kit weighted in at around 35 pounds of wool , leather , brass and feathers . I had my photo taken around 50 000 times give or take . Great bonnet , I would love to have one .

Very cool addition. There were two for sale at my mates shop in Cardiff a few months back, very tempting but I passed.
