Two US Air Force Head Gear Displays

Both books are very very old (40+ years). Only black and white photos or hand drawings.

I've heard of the Littlejohn book from others but we have learned so much more in this hobby since these were printed.

Ive also never held either of these. If you are looking for a general overview as to what each award is, they should be good, but if you want to use them for in depth research in identifying real vs fake, these are not it. Most of the fakes we see now we're made well after these books were printed

Thanks for the advice, are there any newer books like these that you would recommend? Also where would be a good place to buy books specific to one medal, badge or piece of field gear?

I should clarify my comment. Very few books publish fakes as they are always changing.

You should probably start a new thread on these two books and ask others. I don't know them but highly suspect they are out dated.

Good research books are expensive. And many of the best are out of print thus you have to buy them used at inflated prices.

What awards are you interested in getting reference books for?

A first stop (just a first) is B&D publishing and Bender Publishing. Both dedicated to publishing militaria. Sad to say Roger Bender just passed away a few weeks ago...but I think the firm's website is still up and running

As MAP has mentioned these books are quite dated but they have decent information in reference to criteria for the awards.. They don't go specifically into all the makers and other details that we know today.. These were from the pre-computer generation and at the time they came out were some of the best books for their time..

I still have them as they were some of my first reference books for the Third Reich when I really starting getting heavily interested in their medals and decorations..


As I mentioned before, you will have to spend some money on good quality reference books that have detailed photos of various medals and various makers.. Again the money you spend on the reference books initially will save you hundreds on the actual badges..

Here are several that I would recommend that you look for.. Again they are pricey but you may be able to find some from used book dealers as well as other members thinning their collections..

Look for the reference catalog by Detlev Nieman: Specifically Volume 3.. The one posted is sold out but these books are out there...

The second set of headsets is referred to as the HS-33 . Now the actual head set body is slightly different than the normal leather covered type. The one I have is sporting the ANH-B1 type receivers on it and the headset is marked as a HB-7. These types are believed to be a Very Late/Post ww2 type of headsets. There are no period photo's of these being worn in WW2 photo's.
Yours has the cloth cover versus the leather, Either a later or civilian version. Are there any markings on the metal of the headset any where other than the Telephonics marking?

Thanks Phil, The only markings on the metal I could see is in this photo below. I did have a little suspicion that they were civi because they appear to be made and marked by a thelephone company.
