Just down to who made it on the day. A firm like this would have had several employees. One man might trim the insignia, while another might not.

Well to finish:have you ever seen both types usually(trimmed and not trimmed)and could you post pics from both examples?

    Thanks

Hi Fernando, sorry I do not have any photos, as I am not a Royal Navy collector myself. But I have seen many caps over the years.

    Cheers, Ade.

Badges weren't always made by the outfitter but specialist badge makers.

circa ww2, these are hard to date precisely.

Value is not certain, condition, how many want one at the time its for sale etc....

    circa £75-150.

This looks like a nice cap. Here is mine for comparison, also by Gieves. As far as dating is concerned it is worth noting that the length of the peak of officers caps was changed in 1946. Before 1946 it was 2 inches and after 1946 it was 2 1/4 inches. The concentric circles on the cap lining usually seem to indicate pre WW2 manufacture- I suspect your cap will have the shorter peak and date to the 20's or 30's.

Just out of interest, where did you source the peak change date of 1946?
