A M-357-A 'Gibson girl' survival kite. This was once part of a survival set which was stored in life rafts on aircraft and contained a radio, associated equipment and a kite and balloon which could be used to raise an antenna. The name 'Gibson girl' is derived from comparing the radio which was an hour-glass shape to the hour glass figures of 1890's fashion artist Charles Gibson's favourite subjects!

The storage bag is unfortunately a little worse for wear, however, the kite is in excellent condition. As with most of these kites that have survived it has been used as a child's plaything post war but is pretty much unscathed.
The most amazing thing about it is that, despite being 70 years old, it is the easiest kite in the world to put together! Put together and taken down in seconds - if only modern kite manufacturers could do the same

This is example of the standard escape compass in a black 'blister'. The black version is less common than the yellow/orange version. I am unsure whether they were black when they were originally issued or whether they have changed colour over time. It appears that the back piece is black and the front piece is slightly more opaque.

Two more standard escape compasses in poor condition. These are bare brass and appear not to have been painted black at any time. They are shown with all of the other examples of the standard escape compass that I have.

I have been after an original copy of 'GET TOUGH!' for sometime and have finally managed to get one at a reasonable price (although not as reasonable as the original second hand price written on the inside front cover - 10p!)
Written by Major W.E. FAIRBAIRN, of FAIRBAIRN SYKES fighting knife fame it pretty much details (with handy diagrams) every conceivable way of killing a man with your bare hands (or a match box or chair)! As explained in the preface of the book '....this book is the approved standard instruction for all members of His Majesty's forces. The commandos, and parachute troops, harrying the invasion coasts of Europe, have been thoroughly trained in its use. Britain's two-million Home Guard are daily being instructed in its simple but terrible effectiveness.'

Another map! This is a rare Bartholomew silk map covering West Africa (Nigeria, Belgian Congo, etc). It is marked K5 and K6 and there are interesting little anomalies like the scale being on a different angle to the map and the names of places being completed where they reach the border of the map.

A British cardboard / fibre carrier pigeon leg capsule. I guess these were made to replace the metal versions when metal became scarce. I have shown it alongside the British metal version (which was also used in WW1) and as can be seen it is larger. Also shown are the variants of carrier pigeon leg capsule that I have (two British, two American)

Major Fairbairn sure was a great proponent of going after the testicles.....I know it was War, but yikes....lol
