think i may have found a relative:
Cpt J S Slattery - SAS/ Royal Irish Fusiliers Genealogy
if it turns out to be, it will be nice to return the picture to his grandson!

Indeed, it would be nice to return it to his Grandson. Is he wearing the ribbon for an MC? Might make him a bit more researchable, have you tried the London Gazette?

    Good drills Ed!!
'I do not think we can hope for any better thing now.
We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker of course, and the end cannot be far.
It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more. R. SCOTT.
Last Entry - For God's sake look after our people.'

thanks spitace, yes i had the same thoughts about the MC, the only reference to JS Slatery is as follows:

    War Office, 23rd May, 1946
The KING has been graciously pleased to approve
that the following be Mentioned in recognition of
gallant and distinguished services in the
    Mediterranean Theatre: —
    R. Ir. Fus.
    Capt. J. S. SLATTERY (138963)
