just an update incase anyone is interested!
Helen, replyed to my message on the other forum:

"Hi,
Thanks for this. It's an interesting photograph. My grandad's name was actually Joseph Sinnott Slattery but was also known as Johnny Slattery whilst in the SAS.
I don't recognise the man in the photo but most of the photos I've seen he's not wearing a hat or sunglasses. But the writing on the envelope looks similar to my dad's.
I will forward the information to my dad and see if he recognises the man."

and then followed up with a private message:
"Hi Bananamafia! After speaking to my dad he says:
"Yes, it certainly looks like Joe Slattery and he was know for wearing
sun glasses before they became fashionable. In fact in later years he
carried on doing it and could often be mistaken for a Mafia boss!"

I've never seen my grandfather like this. As he died before I was born and most of the photographs are of him either laughing with family or professional 'army' photos in cap and showing curls, this image is new to me.

Where did you find it? Do you know who Charles is? Is there any more story behind it?
And is there anyway I can get a copy of it?

In the book Rogue Warrior on Paddy Maine is an annex with nominal roll of 1stSAS personell that took part in Operation Howard in Germany you may find him in there.
You can also spend 1000 GBP on an SAS war diary

just another little update

Hi Ed

I just want to update you as my dad has reminded me the reason Joe was 'Mentioned in Dispatches'. It was for the disastrous 'Raid on Tobruk' or 'Operation Agreement'.

Often nowadays, after the film, known as "Raid on Rommel". Joe was meant
to blow up fuel supplies* but it didn't go to plan when they were
discovered at a road block and had to withdraw.

*He was an architectural student before the war, so Stirling said if you
know how it's built then you know how to blow it up!

New update and help needed!

After a long wait, the service records have come through to the next of kin.
I received this email from Mr Slattery.

"Firstly, thanks for the photo of my father, J Slattery. Strangely I don't have any photos of him in SAS uniform. He didn't take any in N Africa but did take a few of places in Yugoslavia.

My daughter, Rachael, said you'd be interested in his service record. I got a copy from the MOD but it is all A3 and our A3 scanner is broken at work. But they did send the original of his "Officer's Record of Service" booklet. This I can fit that in my scanner and here is the main page.
I can't find any reference to "N" section "A" force nor can I understand the line under that.
Can you shed and light on the entries?

The only reference I can find for A Force after a quick search was that It was set up by General Wavell in January 1941 with the task of undertaking deception operations, might well be the same thing being related to intelligence duties.
