    Hi All,

Here is a great coat I have had for a fair while but have never posted.

It is a 1944 dated British greatcoat that belonged to John Edward Skipworth, a West Australian that was a member of the 2/28th Battalion.

27th July 1942 he was captured by the Germans on "Ruin Ridge" during the first battle of El Alamein. He then spent the rest of the war in numerous different German POW camps.

26th April 1945 he was returned to the UK as a returned P.W. I believe it was at this time or soon after his liberation that he was issued this British pattern greatcoat and probably applied insignia in the UK for his return to Australia.

    Thanks
    Jason

A nice piece and great research! What sources did you use for research?
And I spy a nice Aussie nurses collection too?

    Cheers,

Thanks, I was lucky that his records were already digitised by the national archives and I matched the dates of his being listed as MIA with the actions of the 2/28th (actually most of the battalion were taken PW that day). I do have some Australian nurses stuff. Have a couple of the grey uniforms, AANS hat and that group in the display case along with her photo albums and some papers.44

Australian units used color patches rather than US style unit patches. The shape of the patch identified the division then the internal colors show the battalion/regiment, the grey border shows it is a AIF unit. The 9th division went to the T shaped patch after serving in the Middle East, some say it was for there service at Tobruk.
