yes, I have some french buttons from napoleon era with similar back. But I am not strong on these buttons so maybe there were used even later.

Earlyer seems more logic. That sort of buttons are hand made, cast. With the up-come of the industrial revolution they only started been pressed in die's. I think Firmin in London was the first one, but never realy found out when he actualy started.
