I was at a bit of a loose end this afternoon, so the wife suggested we go down to Knutsford (Cheshire) and have a look around the antique and charity shops. We walked into 'Cancer Research UK,' I made my way over to the books while my wife went to the ladies clothes. a minute or two later, she was dragging me over to look at an 'army' coat hung amongst the dresses.

I lifted down an officers tunic and trousers (Royal Signals), and then spotted a cap resting on top of the rails. Further investigation revealed an officers greatcoat as well. A quick look inside the tunic and greatcoat for makers label/owners name, revealed nothing, someone had removed them - presumably before handing in to the charity shop. The tunic has all its insignia (Kings Crown), and also War Office controlled unit patches in wire bullion to both sleeves. There is very slight mothing to cap, tunic, and trousers - more noticeably to one of the patches.

From what I could see after examination in the shop, everything appeared to be WW2 period. But when I got home I came across the owners name on the tunic belt and inside the trousers. Whoever removed the names didn't check the items properly! The tunic belt and trousers are named to 2/Lt A. V. S. Fells. Label is dated February 1947. According to the records, he was holding a Regular Army Emergency Commission.

    Cheers,
    Steve.

The great coat is a jewel all by itself! And the cap isn't too shabby either! That was a good idea, to stop in the shop! Nice finds!

A great haul for a charity shop. Most UK charity shops send such items off to specialists these days.
