Thanks for the kind words, all!

Gary, I'm still not sure what it means, but I would assume it represents ditching in the Channel.

Ducks are for diversions I've read. Not sure about the life preserver.

Thanks for taking a look, Michael!

The patch under his name is also his name but written in Arabic. Perhaps he saw service in North Africa?
True however, It is more likely Persian, and it says the same name F J Vellecco. The fa (f) and jm (J ) are the same in Arabic and Persian. But Arabic doesn't have a (V) sound, Persian does, and the first letter after F J could be either a mem (M ), or fa (f) except in Arabic there would be no dot under it, and in Persian the (v) would look more like that. also the character following the lam (l ) in Persian could double the kaf (k) sound, where in Arabic it would read as a nun (n ). The last character would be a wow (ou) in either. So in Arabic it would more likely read meellnuku or feelnuku, and neither has meaning that I know of. In Persian it would be veelk"kou or F J Veelk"kou, pretty close to what it says in English.
