The brass screw type fixing for the shoulder strap looks really familiar (pic 3) but I just cant place it.

Hmm, certainly not Commonwealth. The prong-less buckle is very distinctive though

Any ideas on the holster, that may help narrow it down?

I don't know but I think maybe French or Italian. That circle (what I can see of it) stamped inside the holster flap is similar to stamps on French uniforms and equipment. Any joy with the inked-over writing?

thanks, no I cant make out any of the writing, the top one inked out looks maybe Russian or eastern European with an "я"??
