Default 1914 "Mons" Star - named

    Hey guys,

I found a Mons Star today, named.
I've always wanted one and have been on the look out for years.
They do come up now and again, but mostly in auctions.
I kind of stopped looking, then bang, like fate, it was there.
I paid $45 for it and 2 repo medals as a bunch.
The other 2 are for my young sons to see how well they look after them.
    It's a test..
I tried to find his records online but I'm not having much luck.
What's the best website to use?
I found him on the national records centre website, but I have to go in to see the
    Records.
    I don't live in England.....
    Is there an easier way?

Can someone please help me find his records?

    Thanks,

    Thanks Jerry.
    I appreciate your help!

I saw the archive centre in kew has some records to
    Download for £3.50.
    Has anyone used this service?
    What documents do they provide?
Or is it hit and miss?

Medal card of Browne, David J Corps: Royal Army Medical Corps Regiment No: ... | The National Archives

    Thanks

The medal card I shared is only for his mons star and there should be another for the other two medals, which might be the one at Kew, but it might be the same one.

I have regularly used the service provided at Kew, and £3.50 is not much to pay to access WW1 war diaries (WO95) and other interesting documents. But the medal index is the same as Ancestry UK - which provides it for free.

    Cheers,
    Steve.

The second card confirms the issue of the British War and Victory Medals with the rank of Private. From just these two cards we can tell a few important things.
    1. He did not qualify for the clasp to the 1914 Star.
    2. He was commissioned in the Royal Army Medical Corps 16th March 1915 but as his BWM and VM are in the rank of Pte, he did not serve overseas after being commissioned, no doubt working in a UK hospital.

No. 11 Stationary Hospital was established at Rouen in November 1914.
If his officer record has survived (for some reason medical officer records cannot be located) his Other Ranks service record would have been inserted into it.
Of Other Ranks WW1 service records only around 25% are available due to a German bomb in 1940 that destroyed many of them. If a man served again after 1920 his records could still be with the Army Records Office in Glasgow. These can only be obtained if you can prove that the soldier has been dead for at least 25 years. The records up to 1939 were due to be transferred to the National Archives some time ago, but while the RAF and Navy records made it, the army still have not.
