Do you know if it's essential that you know the name of the ships served on, i know my grandad served on arctic convoys but i can only find the name of a ship he served on while on the north Atlantic convoys, i only have his discharge book and a few shore leave passes. Cheers.

I'm sure that the MOD realise that "next of kins" will not know full details ....

Basically give as much info as you have ...

I'd photocopy ANYTHING that might help and send with application ..

It might be worth the cost of applying for your Grandfather's service record from the MOD.
I think, because you are not direct next of kin, but still "blood", you can apply but if I remember right, a basic charge of £25 is incurred.

I'll have a quick scramble round the net to check this up ..

I think geniune issues of this medal will be quite rare when soon issued.
I was told there was a news report stated that there were only 205 veterans of the convoys still alive !!!
... Then add the relatives who WILL apply, and I don't see a great number of original strike medals being issued.

"Copy" issues are being struck from the dies, and will be marked "copy" on the back.
..(If you do a basic search on E-bay, pre-order of copy issues are being taken by a few militaria suppliers.)

I wonder, did any of those at the opposite end of the Earth and who were involved in Operation Tabarin of 1943-44 to establish a permanent British presence in the Antarctic receive any award for service?
