I have recently acquired this pair of mounted ww2 british medals, the 39-45 and defence medal. I am just wondering, under what circumstances, and to who, only these two medals would have been awarded.

    Thanks

    Vicky.

These would have been awarded to a soldier who served
within the British Isles, and did not go 'overseas'.

WWII British medals are not named - however, those
of Canada, South Africa and New Zealand were
    impressed on the rim.........

Would they not have got the 39-45 star?

There is certain criteria that would have had to have been
met to qualify for each one. I've seen several Vets
    with these two medals only........

Found it, Army personnel had to complete 6 months service in an operational command, naval personnel qualified after 6 months of service, Air Force personnel had to participate in operations against the enemy providing that 2 months service had been completed in an operational unit, and royal observer corps personnel after 1080 days in service.

    Interesting.

    Thanks for the info.

Are these family pieces ? Worth more for sentimental reasons
and family history, but also a very good start to a collection.
    Quite common medals in 'cupro-nickel'.

Canadian versions are more expensive as they are
    made of pure silver.........

No, not family. As for the sentiment, I know the value of them is nowhere near that of WW1 medals and i often find medals like this are over looked due to how common they are and their price. However i still get strangely attached to them as the person that once owned them still earned them at the end of the day. They're nice medals.

It is this fascination and unknown history that gets us all
started in collecting. I agree - they are nice medals !

Named WWI medals can be researched, so they are
    somewhat more interesting.........

Nice pair of medals there, I wouldn't object to having them on display.
