My Gandfathers WW2 Pacific War Medals

Article about: God bless him.

Default My Gandfathers WW2 Pacific War Medals

Hi these are some of my Grandfather Heinz' medals from the Pacific
War in WW2 and the Korean War, and he was a part of the relief
effort in Hiroshima & Nagasaki post-war.
Before he died he gave me something that kick started my
collection - when he was in Hiroshima a doctor gave him
a cigarette case and that is in my militaria collection
    to this day.

He was 17 when he went to war. He fought the Japanese on the
doorstep to Australia in Papua, New Guinea and Kokoda trail,
though like most veterans did not talk about the war at all.
It was like it never happened. He drank to forget and had
a lot of health issues due to nuclear exposure - that is
what killed him in the end.

    These medals include:

    Korean War Medal
    Mine Clearance
    Frontline Service Medals
    Wound Medals
Medal for working in nuclear contaminated areas
and being exposed to nuclear fallout
    The Pacific Star
Commonwealth Medals - King & Country

If they were my responsibility, I would get them remounted as a set-helps stop them being lost or damaged as individual medals-court mounting stops them banging into each other when worn for ANZAC or Armistice Days etc. See attached:

Nice medals! It looks as though you are missing his Australian Service Medal though.

Could you please post some pictures of the 3 medals I have put a cross on, I know what the rest are but i am at a loss as to what those 3 medals are.

    Cheers Luke.

The other two stars that Lithgow has shown are the Africa star and the 1939 to 1945 star, there is only one Pacific star

Like AIF says you are missing the 39 to 45 star, an impressive group none the less

    Regards Paul

Hi Paul It all depends how long he served overseas a lot of guys didn't qualify for the 39-45 star because they didn't do the required 6 months overseas service, you see a lot of pacific groups like this with guys who spent a couple of months in New Guinea then returning home as you only had to step foot in New Guinea for one day to get the Pacific star... He should have received the 1939-45 Australian service medal though.

The one with the red and crimson ribbon is the "Naval Service Medal" 1915-1962.
Interesting when combined with the "Infantry Frontline Service Medal" which is an unofficial 2/12th Battalion award issued by the 2/12th Battalion Association.
I will keep looking for the other two.

    Cheers
    Dave
