I think you're right Mick, I did some looking at SA medals, and it does look like the same markings, and it would appear that C Pettersen was white, due to there being no letter in front of his service number if this is the case. There was an N for native corps, C for Cape corps and M for Indian and Madalay corps. I thought they were interesting because my last name is Peterson. I thought he might have been Norwegian, but the Boers could have spelled it the same, I'll have to look that up next.
