Named British WW2 medals

WWII Vets were very upset that their medals were not personalised
with name, number and regiment on them the way WWI medals
were. It is understandable - the medals then become impersonal
and unidentifiable - with no history as to who 'won' them.

The reason they were not named was to save time and cut cost
- imagine the man hours required to stamp approximately
six million WWI 'Victory' medals.........!

I know the UK was having money troubles by the time the war was over, but it always seems to be the guys who did the fighting who end up getting the short end of the stick.

I think you're right Mick, I did some looking at SA medals, and it does look like the same markings, and it would appear that C Pettersen was white, due to there being no letter in front of his service number if this is the case. There was an N for native corps, C for Cape corps and M for Indian and Madalay corps. I thought they were interesting because my last name is Peterson. I thought he might have been Norwegian, but the Boers could have spelled it the same, I'll have to look that up next.

These are my father's medals, he served with a Scottish Regt in Burma/India.







No designating service no./name/rank on the edges, as has been noted.

Interesting that the ribbons for the 39-45 star and Burma star have their medal ribbons on the wrong medals, with the Burma star having the ribbon for the 39-45 star and vice versa.

The Canadian War Medal is silver whereas the Aussie and British is cupro nickel.

The South African medals were named as were the Aussies.
