An interesting story I've heard throuhout my military career is that towards the end of WWII they produced a large quantity of Purple Heart Medals in anticipation of the large number of casualties they expected in the land invasion of Japan. The Atomic Bombs made that invasion unnecessary; supposably they didn't use up the supply until sometime during the Vietnam War. Be interesting to know if this is true!

This is indeed true - the supply of WWII era medals were awarded during
the Korean War and into the Vietnam War.........

There are also websites which describe the different type styles or fonts
used in the naming of PH medals which changed somewhat through
the eras. Some medals were also privately engraved, so it is very
important to study and learn these varied styles of lettering
and the time frame in which they were used.
