    Hi Skyeman

Thank you very much for this information. Attached are the photos of the BD. I hope they load ok?

I would also like to know what medals he should have worn being apart of the Brigade. I assume he would have been given British service medals in addition to whatever Czech medals he was entitled to.

Let me know what you think.

    Regards

    Ken

    hi,

the colour on the shoulder patches indicates the Army branch

    bright red: General Staff
    crimson red: infantry
    brick red: artillery
    yellow: Horse (recce)
    dark brown: engineers corps
    light brown: signals
air force: sky blue (however, these were not used in exile as airmen were embodied in the RAF

one pip: (I reckon "svobodnik" - lance corporal)

I should very much like to see the pics indeed as there is a number of original shoulder titles I have in my collection or have seen elsewhere, though I've never heard of any Dutch made exiled Czech insignia.
From what I gather from you trade badge description, my guess is what you are refering to is a standard bandsman battledress patch. does it look anything like the one depicted on the postcard attached?

I actually now think I know who this jacket belonged to. He was indeed in the band as a trumpeter. I am assuming the epaulette insignia is either artillery or infantry. As a member of the band, I am assuming he still would have been a soldier first and bandsman second. In other words he would have been in action like everyone else.

    hi,
the CIABG formation sign looks like nothing I've seen so far. Also, the nationality title is rather curious.
The trade sleeve patch is indeed a bandsman patch.

If you are looking for ribbons, the 'must' is
Commemorative Medal of the Czechoslovak Army Abroad. (and personally, I'd cut it there as most of Czechoslovaks did not wear/were not entitled to much else.
As there's clearly been more ribbons sewn to your BD, you might be looking for a CZ War Cross 1939, Medal for Gallantry in Face of the Enemy and the (noncombat) Medal 'For Merit'.

British campaign medals/stars would also apply (eg 39-45 star/medal, Defence medal, F&G star, possibly Africa with 8th Army rossette).

Czech decorations precede the foreign (British), War Cross goes 1st, then Medal for Gallantry, then For Merit, then Commemorative Medal, then anything foreign....

    cheers,
    s.

    Hi

Thank you very much for that info. Do you think it is Infantry or Artillery?

I am basing my opinion on the badges having seen different patches made in different places in France, Belgium and Holland. It does not look English made to me. It resembles some Canadian insignia I have seen made in Belgium and Holland.

Should I get more info on the original owner, will let you know.

    Thanks again!

My personal option, in accordance with my long years experience, that badge on pictures is Czechoslovak made in Buzuluk, where 1st Czechoslovak Independent Field Battalion in USSR was set up. In this place quartermaster section of unit manufactured a couple of hundreds cap badges as small as large (for warrant officers and officers), including dog-tags and distinctions for NCO, WO/officers. This happened in 1942-43. From 15th of October 1943 this production was carried out as factory production provided by machinery factories and badges had different shapes. Finally my opinion - Buzuluk manufacture production provided by technical experienced soldiers of Battalion who were former technicians and engineers of Skoda Plzen factory before an abolish of Czechoslovakia after 15th of March 1939. There a couple of proofs that this badge can by from such a manufacturing.

Details about these types of badges you can find in my reference book which is planned for the issue at 70th anniversary of the end of WW2 in Europe in next May 2015.
Dear Ltmoravcuk, may I please enquire concerning your book's title? I am always at the rather desperate research of literature on cap badges from Warsaw Pact countries. I've amassed 700+from WP and Yugoslavia, plus a couple of third world socialist states, but with the notable exceptions of the DDR and USSR, my cataloguing relies on partial and mostly scant information. Since I am focusing in these years on WWII Soviet-organised formations - and therefore on wartime/early post-war cockades from WP states, Yugoslavia and Greece - your book would be a much needed and hoped for help in my cataloguing efforts of my Czechoslovak collection!

Hello, the book is still under the working. I hope that year fortunately will be issued. This is very wide and complicated discipline becasue you need to put very huge sources together. Nobody within more than 70 years did not do so so far and I would like to make it professionally. Here you can see an example of double page about one type of soldier from 1945:

    LSM-apr.45-final.jpg

The book will consist of 56 such reconstructions from 1941 to 1945. Plus you can see and read within the text part a lot very important information and fact about uniforms and their accessories. Unfortunately the book will be issued in Slovak and Czech, only.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply!
I really do very much look forward to the publication of the book - it does look like a very competently put together source! And Czech or not I'll happily buy it and will surely find a way to go through it.
    Thanks again!

p.s. do keep us posted the actual publication date!

    Dear Ltmoravcuk,
any chance you could update us on the status of the book? Searched online and in bookstores in Bratislava, but probably did not know what to look for. I hope it's out and I look forward reading it!
    Best,
