how to tell if a US patch is from ww2

Article about: In the last group, all but the 30th 'Old Hickory' Division patch are good - that one is definitely modern/recent because of the plastic coating ! Ade is correct in each reply.............. S

    I am looking for info to tell if a US patch is from ww2 without a black light.

    'Cut edge' or trimmed patches are known to be WWII era, as opposed
    to 'Merrowed edge' types - where the border is entirely wrapped
    with thread - though I also look for light coloured thread on
    the reverse, sometimes known as 'snow'................

    A couple of other points in addition to Steve's comments.

    You could try a burn test to a loose thread.

    Some wartime patches have green thread backing (like the "snow" Steve describes) known as "Greenbacks" and these are a bit more scarce to find.

    I just look on info about Greenback and I do think I have one.

    Hi Chris, all of these are WW2 era, bar the right hand 29th Inf Div insignia. Note the different thicker edging to this patch. This is a post war "Merrowed edge" patch. A much later type of construction.
