    I'll still run with paint

Standard finish on the bottom set as opposed to subdued (blackened) on the top set. The top set are painted. The black paint gets dried through age and exposure and appears to be a blue enamelled finish.

Hope this helps you a tad mate

    All the best

Thanks Dave ~ for the Heads up !

Makes perfectly good sense re the patina fade ~

Seems this is a close as I am about to get to a specific Unit badge ~ but then ~ I will not resign myself over the issue ~ a bit like the (intact) .50 cal and Boys .55 rounds ~ which I believe WILL appear sooner or later as we find the projectiles and the cases ~

What comes up will come up!

I made an inquiry to the Curators of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra ~ regarding my "Blue" Rising Sun ~

The reply came back today ~

    Post your WW2 Australian Insignia.

    Dear Stuart

    Thank you for your enquiry.

I passed it onto our Conservation staff who made the following comment:

“I would say the blue is copper/sulphur corrosion products. The collar and hat Rising Sun hat badges were typically patinated using sulphur compounds to give the dark brown colour. In the right environmental conditions the brown copper sulphides can change to bright blue copper sulphides or sulphates.”

Additionally, we do not note any raised enclosures around the apparent “enamelled” section. Enamelled uses heated glass powder which flows, when super-heated, into the design and is corralled by a raised border to stop it escaping into areas not to be enamelled. It would appear too, that, once cleaned, this blue has disappeared – this would not happen with enamelling.

Overall, then, we suggest you have standard collar badges which were chemically darkened during manufacturing (most badges designed for operational use were darkened), and that this process, combined with time and climate, has been proved responsible for the blue copper sulphate colour evident on the badges.

I hope this is of assistance

    Best regards

I bought a small lot of Australian 'modern' badges just to add an element of the contemporary badges to my humble collection ~

( I thank Dave for scrutinising the lot for me, to verify originality ~ )

( Please excuse the German armoured badge ! Also part of the parcel )

    G'day all,
Something a little special, well I think it is being a Taswegian.
Headquarters Tasmania Force June 42-April 43. Formed by redesignation of HQ Tasmania L of C area in June 1942 and reverted back to this title on 29.4.1943. Performed both an operational and L of C headquarters role during its existence which was only around 10 months. A super rare patch.

Stoked with this one for sure.
