US 4th Infantry Division patch with excess material flaps

Here is something I have never seen before.. This is a 4th Infantry Division Patch (WW2 era) with the excess cloth folded back into flaps so it is the same size as the standard issue cut edge patch.

This patch is obviously larger than what I assume to be a standard issue patch but instead of cutting away the excess material, it was folded back.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this before??

Thats a nice soldier modified patch. He must of been the only one in Division that had the square shaped patch!

You don't see that often.

No never seen one but nothing surprises me when GI's modify their patches.

Would not be surprised if you see one with added stitching around the Ivy

Not surprised that it would have been modified by a Soldier.. Rather than cutting away the excess.. Seems like a waste of extra cloth material but, who knows..

I will see if I can put a smaller 4th ID up for comparison to this one..

I believe the larger issue 4th ID patches were earlier, most likely was issued one of the earlier stock. If I had to guess this was done to match the insignia of others in the unit with the small 4th SSI

I shared this in response to a similar thread Smitty posted on another forum, but here are three folded 4th ID patches that came out of a named grouping. Vet was with the 4th early in the war.
