    Herbert,

My name is Paul Basso, a former AME-1, US Navy, from 1972-1983. I used to collect rating insignias (crows) when I was in but lost interest after I was discharged. Now I'm trying to build up a collection of both the crows and photos of crows of all color combinations and distinguishing marks (Navy, Coast Guard, Revenue Cutter, and whoever else had ratings). I would love to see what you have available for download, if it's still available. Let me know please. I'd appreciate it greatly.

    Yours in collecting,
    Paul Basso

Default Does anyone know what this is?

Greetings, I hope it is alright that I post here. I looked for a place to make an introduction post, but could not find one.

so I'll make a brief one here:

I am 21 and I live in Norway and have always been very interested in army/navy history.
I found this site when searching for an answer to a qeustion I will post further down.

A few years ago, I bought an old box of 'assorted randoms' at a yard sale for roughly 10$ When sifting through the various items of greater/lesser interest, I found the rating badge that I have posted a picture of below. At the time I had mostly 'studied' Norwegian army history and had not yet absorbed much information on navy history, much less American history. So I 'dismissed' it as a novelty item or similar, but I kept it around for a while until it got packed away when I moved to a new home.

About a year ago, I found it again, and with more knowledge regarding military and navy history I knew it was US Navy Rating badge. with the rate of Petty Officer 1st class and if I am not completely mistaken, it is from ca. 1940. But the symbol below the crow have me confused. I have searched and searched for any information on that specific symbol and I hope someone here can share their wisdom and tell me what is is.

(If I had to make a guess, I't say it is some form of engineering/machinist badge, based on the monkey-wrench. But the round object in the back is unknown to me. but by the looks of it, there is steam coming out of the sides, so maybe a boiler? Boiler Machinist?)

I have NO idea how it ended up in Norway, seeing as how it is American. Though I guess it might have been brought from overseas by a fledgeling collector?

I apologize for the poor quality of the picture, I had to take this with my phone.

Thanks in advance for any and all information and I am very sorry if this is the wrong place or if the thread is 'off limits' for newcomers.

    Sincerely:
    Eilert L. J.

I was in the Navy until 2011. I did a color guard for a Sub veterans group. One of the old bubble heads was telling me about a rating badge in the 50's that was for the sailors who worked on the Nuc subs. It was for a rating that worked on the nuclear reactors. But they got rid of it real fast. Because when they pulled into a foreign port the Soviet spies could track the Nuclear subs then.
Have you heard of this rating badge before and do you have one that you could show?
    Thanks

    Hi Eilert,
What you have is a Boiler Technician. This rating badge first came out in 1948. It was in use for some time and may be in use today.,

    Hi,
Here is a bullion example I have in my collection. This is on a uniform. This rate was called Nuclear Weaponsman used from 1957-1961. I think these guys were in charge of the nukes.

Thank you for the reply. would you happen to know why I have not found this badge on other pages dedicated to show the various rating badges of days past and present day?

    Eilert,
Not sure why you can not find it. If you decide to get collecting USN rating badges and insignia, John Stacey has a book out. I think I mention the title on this thread somewhere. I have my own site that shows my collection of rating badges, to include other U.S. Sea services.
Not sure if this is o.k, to post the link here.

I bought this pillow cover that has some rating badges and officer insignia on to include four officer small buttons. Two of them are the USNR buttons. The rating badges and insignia are from ww1 -1920's.

I did these two displays of rating badges. The fist display is of 1913 - 1930's white rating badges style. I used all chief petty officer rates except for sailmaker and ship's cook, as that rank did not exist. The ship's cook chief rank did not come to exist until 1944-1945.

This next display is ww2 cpo rating badges. I have at least one example of every rating badge that existed during this time period. This display does not have have the letter rates or specialist rating badges. Did not have enough room. I think there is around 160 cpo rates on there. This is a pretty big display at 40x60. I did one out of the frame so the glare would not affect the picture.
