When family members were killed, the blue star was replaced with a gold one representing sacrifice.
A silver star stood for someone invalided home for wounds sustained overseas.
Lapel pins also sported the same symbols.

Awarded to the next of kin of servicemen and women killed in action. Instituted by an Act of Congress in 1947 for retrospective wear for WW1 and WW2 casualties, this badge has been given to the families of the fallen ever since.
In its original cardboard presentation box with satin lined lid this badge is unitialed, and as such is an un-issued original.

In 2008 the US Military authorised this badge for lapel wear by servicemen who had lost immediate family to enemy action.
