WW2 Aeronautical Inspection Directorate crest

I was given this crest by one of my wife’s customers. It dates from WW2 and is cast aluminium or similar. It is about 6” x 4” (15cm x 10cm). It is for the Aeronautical Ispection Directorate, however, I can’t seem to find an awful lot about them. Does anybody know anymore about AID and where this crest might have been used?
