    If it is not British then I don't know what it is, but I'm pretty sure it is. The closure tabs are 1958 pattern, the type that first inspired personal modification of webbing in the British army, and it is a tailored pouch rather than an issued one.

    It doesn't have a yoke attachment point and the use wear from the belt suggests it was worn at the side, where the water bottle or gas mask pouch would go, and it was used in a temperate climate. So, possibilities;
    1) additional ammo pouch for link, pocket for cleaning kit? Could be any date from 1958 to 1990.
    2) a belt mountable gasmask pouch, pocket for fuller's earth bottle. 1958-1972ish.
    3) a ration/ escape and evasion pouch.1958-1990.
    4) specialist equipment pouch. 1958-1990.

    If its one of the first three then it could well have been made for an airborne soldier as modding was standard for them but most other units didn't allow it.

    Sort of thing I wouldn't mind having, thanks for showing it.

    Looks more like a AK47 magazine pouch and very similar to the ammo pouch the Romanians used.

    I remember looking at both the British and Russian pouches before posting and there were difference's with the closure tabs. Last I remember, it's still available on eBay for ten U. S. dollars.

    Here is a photo of the Romanian pouch I was referring to. On actually seeing it again, however, it doesn't much look like your example though the fastenings are similar.
    I still think it is a AK47 magazine pouch but probably a locally made example, maybe a former British colony or something like that. Perhaps middle Eastern or Iran / Iraq?
    Not bad for $10, maybe worth taking a chance even with the damage.

    There are quite a bit of similar bags/pouches when doing Google image search but there is always one thing which differs from this. The seller had it listed as a U.S. WW2 water pouch but I assured her it wasn't. Just trying to help her out on who and what it is.
