any ideas what this is on a helio MkV tripod??

Article about: Hi everyone, does anyone have any ideas on this one? its obviously a helio mkv tripod, but im having trouble working out what the optic is? any help appreciated as always!! kind regards ed

    Looks a bit like a ww2 No. 8 Gun Sight to me, possibly touched up post- war, or may be post- war version? Any markings at all? Cheers.

    thanks mate, yes I can see the similarities with the no.8 sight, no markings I can see, so they must be underneath the optic.
    Why would a gun sight be on a tripod though? and wouldn't the no8 sight have a crosshair as this one doesn't???

    oh yeah, markings to bottom read:

    Telescope bearing No14 MK3 with "Cooke Troughton and Simms" makers mark.

    many thanks spitace for the pointer! still no idea why on the helio tripod though!

    These seem to be very similar to the sights used on the Vickers Predictor but probably a later model.
    A great video explains the predicter here and shows the bearing telescope around 1 minute 30 seconds in.

    No idea why they would be on those tripods though unless it was to make them sell-able.

    Could it have been used by a Forwards Observation Officer?

    Another thought is that these could have been set up for training student gunners at a school of Artillery.
