Just a geuss;
As they exclude light round the sides and have reddish lenses I'd say they were something to do with night fighting.... Seen similar things for nighttime interceptor aircrew so that they could do whatever needed doing in normal light prior to take off without messing up their nightsight.
Other options are mountain troops (anti snow-blindness) and, stretching it a bit, anti-gas.
