I wanted to take advantage of this post to ask confirmation whether this is a british mk6 gas mask!?? I found it in one of my grandpas cupboards..is it a ww2 or late 50s??

That's the Mk. 7 Light AG Respirator. The Mk. 6 is the similar looking one with a grey-painted valve holder and threaded Mk. III Eyepieces. The 7 is all black and has non-threaded Mk. IV Eyepieces.

Mate noticed on your GMH haversack the snap fasteners, did British haversacks use snap fasteners - or is this only Australia.

UK did too, just a different type. My MTX '37 RAN also has what I call eagle snaps (US)

someone asked a similar question a while back and there IS (was?) a site....somewhere.....loads of pics, bags etc etc....it was/is really impressive....now, I know what you're gonna say.........
