Supposed Graves registration box

I was told of this box is a human remains box from grave registration in World War II it is metal lined with a leather seal but I have no idea what it actually is so any help would be wonderful

Has it got three handles on each side? Looks like a repatriation casket. Grisly find.

If it is such a casket, it is something that deserves to be preserved, though it’s not something I would care to have in my collection...

I did text my Chaplain friend, he hadn’t seen One before but would look into it. He is active chaplain so it’s not an overnight answer.

Mine is definitely smaller and it's hinged on the top instead of having a separate bottom piece, the construction of the one you posted is almost identical to mine
