unknown load carrier?

Article about: Quick question if i may? what exactly was this designed to carry? Ive seen them listed as "mortar carrier" but i am unsure if that is accurate? any pointers appreciated!

    It's for carrying the a large thermos / hot food container.

    This might be of interest. It shows the RWF filling hot food containers with tea in July 1944. You can just make out one of the webbing carriers behind the container being filled.unknown load carrier?
