Unknown Satchel- Anyone know anything?
Article about: I picked up this satchel /messenger bag at a garage sale, but the proprietor hadn't a clue where it was from or what it was. It looked like a WW2-era bag, and the symbols on the front look e

Re: Unknown Satchel- Anyone know anything?
Hi MH,
As to the bag:
The '2/62' might be the date of manufacture, i.e.Feb, 1962.
The prominent and colourful DDR symbol is unusual - I saw alot of DDR stuff at surplus wholesalers in the 1990s and most had the eagle, but few had the full hammer and sickle.
It's worth more as a very strurdy and usefull bag than as a collectable at present, but there may be a market for DDR stuff one day- a heck of a lot has been destroyed.
The cary strap is from something else- non DDR.
Otherwise, welcome to the forum...... it's usually very friendly and quite funny (easliy the best atmosphere I've come across online), so I'm sorry if your first experience of this forum isn't perfect.

Re: Unknown Satchel- Anyone know anything?
Its a postwar Bundeswehr bag note the NATO stock number.
East Germany was not in NATO. Someone has added this badge later.
It is a top tip that the stock numbers take the same form and the second group of digits represent the country. 12 is for BRD, 99 is UK, 01 is USA I don't know the rest?
Regards
Jock

Genossen, It is an obsolete Bundy Haversack with a DDR badge, junk, it just spoilt a good Bundeswehr Haversack, collectable in its own right.
The Wrecker who did this will face a People's Court and its guilt judgement.

Re: Unknown Satchel- Anyone know anything?
Whew... I had no idea that so many would be able to chime in on this thing! In a way, Im kinda glad that its not worth anything, It makes an awesome bookbag, perfectly sized to fit a sketchpad and a D&D book or two into for game nights. Id worry about using it if it wasnt a retailer-modded bag.
BTW, I have another item that I would like some info on, but I dont think its from ww2 era. Is there a forum I can go to for antique swords/weapons?
