US Marine equipment still in storage on the BB55.

Article about: Amazing to see that gear still on the ship considering she was decommissioned in 1947, and sold in 1961. I visited the ship twice in 1987, but my photos were destroyed in the flood of 2006.

    Hi all,

A few months back I was lucky enough to get a behind the scene tour of the Battleship North Carolina BB55. We were shown all kinds of areas but the one that made my heart stop was "Pulpot's Room". In one end of the room was a pile of helmets with Hawley liners that was about knee high. In the rest of the room was tons of WW1 era gear that was NOS. There was even a whole large box of NOS BAR magazines. I could have stayed for days looking through all the gear but the tour had to go on. Well enjoy the few pics I got of this stuff.

Oh and one of the other store rooms on the ship.

Love those helmets ! Interesting that all this stuff wasn't
disposed of a long time ago..........

Not good to see all the mould though-will eventually destroy even the hardy canvas web stuff and most quartermasters will have a fit over the non orderly stacking of the helmet/liners.

Incredible.....and just makes you wonder how much more of this stuff is packed in some storage locker or room someplace just waiting to be discovered!

I notice that some of the pots are painted the same colour as the deck. Probably a Navy thing.

All the white specks are just paint that has fallen off the bulkhead. But yes these need to be stored much better. I was wondering if any of the guys that were issued this stuff put an I.D. number and if this stuff could be tracked back.

Cool photos. Too bad for the poor storage conditions.
    Cheers.
