I got this mess kit today and i just recently noticed that the pan was dated 1918 and the top part was ww2. I got it for $4 any ideas??

It's just a mismatched pair as WW1 & WW2 are identical

The WWI's top lid was much shallower and not divided into 2 compartments as the WWII's were. William

Also Ryan, if you are looking for info on this item, it is refered to as a "Meat Can" not a mess kit. In the early years they were used to store a days ration of meat. The mess kit evolved over the years. The link I posted a couple comments up is actually quite interesting to read, tells the story of the meat can pretty well.
