Default WW2 US Medical First Aid Tins x 2

I recently purchased these two medical tins for gas casualties. Appear to be WW2 US items. They are still covered in dust/dirt so the text etc will probably come back clearer - any advice for cleaning them without damaging the paint would be much appreciated?

Am i correct in thinking that they are from vehicles? Are these yellow gas ones rarer - as i've only seen the green general first aid tins before?
    Cheers, Jimbo

These would go in special brackets that were attached inside several types of vehicles. The gas one is indeed rare, the green ones were made & refurbished post-war too.

    Thanks for the additional info
I'll have to clean them up a bit and see how they turn out. I think that I'll just used some washing up liquid and a soft sponge, although any advice would be much appreciated!
