Nobody's got it yet, but thanks for the guesses.
This fellow was an MGM star and at the height of his film popularity when he voluntered in 1943. Right on par with Flynn and Cagney.
You would probably have to be 70 today to have enjoyed any of his movies.
He and my father were close friends, after the war, until the actor's death.
