Nice find.
Personally, I would be tempted to just oil wipe it over with a light machine oil and leave it at that, oh, and dont put it back in the scabbard while the oil is still wet, because it will leach through the canvas and mark it badly.

No, I think I'll leave what little there is on it. I like the patina the rust gives it. The oxidation is very light, so light that I can scrape it off with my fingernail.

Thanks Ian for the tip. I have some gun oil handy, would that do the job?
