'Claymore' Sword - Real or Repro.........?

Hi all !

Was shown this with an opportunity to buy, but I believe it's
either a cheap repro from the 1970's-80's, or possibly
a type of ceremonial sword. It has been chromed,
and there are no maker marks that I can see.

I bought a Pedersoli Brown Bess from him 2 years ago,
so it likely ties in as a re-enactor British Private's
sword of the mid/late 1700's. ( I've already
told the guy it's not worth much. )

From what I can see, I would say it is a repro. If it was a genuine issued piece I would expect to see makers/ government issue marks. Cheers.

It looks cheap and nasty to my eyes, no quality to it at all and even if an OR's issue item originally I would still expect it to look better than this.

Many of these were lavishly decorated and produced by some of the finest sword makers in England, like Wilkinson. This looks like a poorly made replica. I don't even see any indication of from which Monarch's reign it was supposed to have been used under.

This is NOT a Claymore, a Claymore is about 6 feet long and takes 2 hands to use. The proper name for this sword is a Basket Sword..yours looks like a modern repro as I have handled many originals in the past.

I could never figure out how the Basket Sword or Highland Sword became known as a Claymore, they look nothing alike ect, just one of those oddball things I guess.

I thought I would post a few photo's of my basket hilt sword for comparison.

This sword was made during the reign of Edward V11, in the early 1900's. This is shown by the small gold medallion set into the blade just below the hilt.

This is a standard officers issue with a plain blade, although private purchase swords could be acquired with engraved blades.

The quality of production of these standard issue swords in comparison with the one at the beginning of the post is fairly obvious.
