The quality difference is indeed quite obvious. I suspected
as much but just needed to be sure - don't have
experience with this type of sword.

Definitely an awful fake. Not even good enough for a reenactor.
I'll let the guy know. I don't think he has a use for
it anyway, so he just might tell me to keep it.
Lol - the 'engraving' is stamped or
pressed on.........

It's my understanding that the small discs were maker's proof marks as an assurance of quality. With an image attached showing the evolution of those from the Wilkinson firm to a later one that was etched onto the blade. Best regards, Fred

Proof mark on a British 1845 Pattern sword. I expected to see
one of these which is why I was leaning towards a repro:
