The scabbard is the standard M-3 type manufactured by the Beckwith Co. and should actually be of a type of fibreglass construction that was originally an olive drab colour. The bayo is made by the American Fork & Hoe Co. of Evansville, Indiana.

The scabbard is indeed fiberglass and the copper color paint is chipping off. Does anyone think the scabbard paint is period done? Should I leave it or chip it off?

I would remove the incorrect paint.

Scabbards were originally finished in OD green. As Ade says,
I too would remove it, if possible.............

I spent about 5mins scratching paint off with my finger nail.


Tomorrow I'll see if I can get the rest off. Maybe using fine grit sandpaper?

It seems to be coming off rather well - Keep going with your fingernail.
Sanding may remove a lot of the original surface colour...........

I'll continue working on it tomorrow. The paint that's still on it will be more difficult to remove.

Try a small piece of plastic, say a guitar pick,
or something not too abraisive........
