I would remove the incorrect paint.

Scabbards were originally finished in OD green. As Ade says,
I too would remove it, if possible.............

I spent about 5mins scratching paint off with my finger nail.
Tomorrow I'll see if I can get the rest off. Maybe using fine grit sandpaper?
It seems to be coming off rather well - Keep going with your fingernail.
Sanding may remove a lot of the original surface colour...........

Try a small piece of plastic, say a guitar pick,
or something not too abraisive........
