Sword Bamboo Canes

Hi all,

Just after a bit of advice. I have been offered 2 Bamboo Canes with a concealed, 6 sided sword inside. I am off to view them this afternoon so can provide more pics. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice in recognising if these are reproductions? The tops apparently are made of white metal with the regiments insignia on it.

Okey Doke! Are they legal in this country? I could swear i've heard they are illegal to own?

V I don't think the police would like you strutting through your local park with 1!!!..I'm sure you can own them but like every weapon kept in your house....Cheers Terry.

Sword canes that are Less than 100 years old are illegal to own in the UK. Anything older than that is considered an antique and is exempt from the 1988 law that made them illegal to have. A decent Regimental sword cane would have a Sterling Silver knob, I would think, and as silver, they would be Hallmarked and easier to date by them. Not only are they illegal to own(after 1988) but they are illegal to trade in them as well. Should you have one that Is over 100 years old, it is fine to own, but you can Not take it out into public without Police permission and probable escort as well. You guys sure have some unusual laws over there...

Criminal Justice act 1988 states;

(1) Any person who manufactures, sells or hires or offers for sale or hire, exposes or has in his possession for the purpose of sale or hire, or lends or gives to any other person, a weapon to which this section applies shall be guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale or both.

Section relates to numerous weapons including.

(a) a knuckleduster, that is, a band of metal or other hard material worn on one or more fingers, and designed to cause injury, and any weapon incorporating a knuckleduster;

(b) a swordstick, that is, a hollow walking stick or cane containing a blade which may be used as a sword;

Fab, thank you everyone! One point of interest, where do you stand with the First World War Fighting Knives that are "knuckledusters"? I'm assuming they are illegal to own too? Not that i have one, but i see a few about in antique shops.

I have one of these I think, it sounds identical. I was told they were made up by a guy in Liverpool in the 80's who sold them on a market. I think Ned was the guy that told me about mine if I remember. It has a spiked hexagonal rod inside rather than a sword blade, small brass tip at the floor end and a brass plated white metal handle with regt insignia in relief, inside a varnished bamboo cane.

Brass knuckles are illegal in the United Kingdom, so I would imagine that having a pair with a huge Knife attached to them would not help it's legality much. Just owning such a thing can easily land you in jail today. The sellers at shows and antique shops are stretching their luck and if they ran into a cop who's wife told him that morning that she was leaving him to go live with his brother, I think the shop keeper could be having a real bad day also. WWI knuckle knives are Real Close to being 100 years old(and thus an antique), but for another 3 or 4 years.....it's still touch and go. It will be a goodly while until the huge number of WWII manufactured knucks will be allowed...

By the way...if you want to see what a Real sword cane can be, take a look at this website. For years, I have contemplated purchasing one, but have never gotten around to it yet. (Yes, we can have them here in the States...)

In Belgium you can have them but not transport them!
.....I always wundered how on hearth it then would be possible to own one....
