My father Lloyd B Rutherford (Canadian RHLI) was captured at Dieppe and was held prisoner in Stalag VIIIB and later Stalag IID. Is it possible to find out his prisoner number (ie, the number stamped on his POW dog tag)?

If the Canadians keep their records like the British then in theory it should be possible. The British version of 'Ancestry.com' does record British P.o.W's and their prison number. There is a Canadian version of Ancestry.com so you might want to try there (although you do have to subscribe). The other option is to fight with the Canadian Archives (I've yet to find an archive that is easy to navigate!)
Second World War: 1939-1945 - Library and Archives Canada
I assume you are aware of this (Red Cross traced his son... At the bottom of the page)

Did the diary ever turn up?

Thanks Grimebox I'll follow up on both your suggestions.
Thanks also for link to Milwaukee Journal - your interest and help is really much appreciated.

Just to give you an example from Ancestry.com, this is a British PoW tag I bought which shows what information is available
No luck at all so far with the diary - I'm still working on it though......
That's exactly the info that I'm looking for!
I don't know whether you have contacted this organisation/group. They might be able to help you or at least point you in the right direction:
Lamsdorf: Stalag VIIIB 344 Prisoner of War Camp 1940 - 1945 - Home
STALAG ..... also Dulag, Ilag, Marlag, Milag & Oflag - Home
Have previously checked out theLamsdorf: Stalag VIIIB website but have not thought to contact them. They are asking for names and info so I'll give them Dad's details and add a request for info on how to locate his POW number.
The other website is new to me - I'll take the same approach with them.
Thanks again.
Bruce
