Hi Gillian, I ran my search with the spelling you provided and nothing in military records came up.

Having done family history now for many years I have discovered that odd ways of spelling names in official records is not unusual, in fact, I found one the other week with his name spelt two ways in one set of records!

So I am certain the records are correct. Plus the uniform photo fits for RGA.

Re the unit: you may be right!

    Cheers, Ade.

Excellent work, Ade! Thank you ever so much.

My Mother did mention Penrith / Lowther & Westmorland. I can confirm that the family name is Harrison. (My Mothers maiden name) It all adds up. This has made my Christmas!

I have one more man I need to research who is my Great Uncle on my Fathers side who served in the RAF during WW2. I will create a new post so not to get mixed up within this thread. If could keep an eye out for it that would be great. I really appreciate you taking the time to research.

    All the best. Gillan Bell

With regards to his uniform. Would that be the 1902 or 1914 Pattern service Dress & a P1903 5-pocket Bandolier that he is wearing in the photos ?

    Cheers, Gillan

Default A few pieces to add to the jigsaw...

To include my Great grandfathers identity tags and medical discharge certificate, dated 1919.

I was wondering if any of the information on the certificate could correspond with his particular regiment ?

All we know is that he ended up in France... Could it have possibly been with the 13th Brigade RGA?

    All comments welcome. Thank you.

    Regards, Gillan.

    Gillian,

It looks like the 1907 tunic according to this site British Other Ranks five-button Service Dress Jacket I'm not 100% sure but think the 1914 pattern SD was the simplified version.

As for the unit well, he may have just had a good scrub at their baths but here's something to read about the RGA The Siege Batteries of the Royal Garrison Artillery - The Long, Long Trail and where the base depots were The Royal Artillery depots, training units and home defences of 1914-1918
