Hiya, as it is Her Majesty's Diamond Jubillee Year, I thought it would be nice to celebrate with a thread about her service in the wartime Auxiliary Territorial Service.

The Queen is now the only Head of State to have seen service in WW2.

No 230873 Second Subaltern Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor joined the ATS in March 1945.

Very nice images Lez, thank you for sharing them. I love the shot where she is beaming away, sat behind the wheel!

Great photos! As a 47 year old, I don't remember a time when she was not our Queen, it is just so different to see her like this.

Hiya Lads, thanks for the kind comments.

Hi Carl, I think she would have liked to have stayed on in the ATS according to the article in the first link.

Hi Nuno, many of these pics were taken when the King and Queen visited her to see her training.

Hi Paul, I am told the National Army Museum holds some of her items and I need to book an appointment to see them if this is true.

Hi Dave, I am the same. She was quite a looker in her day too.

    Cheers, Lez.

Fascinated with one of these photos - the second row, photo on the right of Princess Elizabeth sitting surrounded by other ladies from the ATS, the two sitting beside her with dogs on their laps. I have another version of this photo, more formal - the one on this site must have been taken after the official ones. I am trying to find out where the photo was taken. Does anyone recognise the building in the background? Any is anyone able to date this photo a little more than just 1939-1945? Thanks for your help - I am actually trying to track down my aunt's history, and I'm pretty sure she is in this picture, and knowing when and where it was taken will help a lot.
